Chateau Fonroque

Chateau Fonroque

Château Fonroque is a famous Bordeaux winery in Saint-Émilion. It has been owned by the Moueix family since 1931 and managed by Alain Moueix since 2001.

The Fonroque estate has around 20 hectares of land planted with almost 18 hectares of vines, with an average age of around 35 years. Around 80% of the vineyard area is planted to Merlot, the rest to Cabernet Franc on limestone and clay-limestone soils.

Château Fonroque's grand vin is made with approximately 85 % of merlot and 15 % of cabernet franc. The grapes are hand-picked and sorted, then fermented in temperature-controlled barrels. The second wine, Fonroque, is aged for 16 months in barrel, also with 30 % of new French oak, before bottling in French oak barrels (40 % new).

Alain Moueix was one of the first Bordeaux winegrowers to start organic farming methods and is now certified biodynamic.
